A freelance journalist and film maker based in London.
Since he first visited the Czech Republic as a student in 1978, he has often been back for radio, TV and journalism work – and for fun. He has written a lot about the music in Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania. He co-edited the Rough Guide to World Music (Penguin), which in its first edition in 1994, included the first popular guide to Czech folk music in English. He is now the world music critic on the London Evening Standard and editor in chief of Songlines magazine. He is currently making a TV documentary on the history and legacy of Hungarian táncház.
