He graduated from the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts (JAMU) in Brno, Czech Republic, while undertaking an internship at the University of North Texas in Denton (USA). In 2002, he co-founded the JazzFestBrno, international jazz festival, which soon gained a remarkable reputation and has been annually presenting top performers of jazz genre (and beyond) from all over the world. Since 2017 he has been holding the position of the program director of the prestigious cross-over festival Strings of Autumn in Prague. In addition to cultural and organizational activities, Vilém has been active as a musician since mid 90´s, primarily as a member of the Four Elements band, the Unity Quartet and the Two-Generation Trio. In 2013 he founded the Vilém Spilka Quartet, with which he currently performs on the festival and club stages. The debut album of the band, called Podvod, was nominated for the Czech Anděl Award in 2017. He has also been involved in the Department of Jazz Performance at the Music Faculty of JAMU in Brno as a guitar teacher and as the head of the whole department (since 2011).
